Kashia Band of Pomo Indians
The Kashia Band of Pomo Indians are the first inhabitants of the coastal Sonoma County area around Fort Ross. An estimated 1,500 people inhabited this area before European settler-colonialism. By 1870, only 3 villages remained. In 1914, the US cColonial government began the process of taking the remaining free land into “trust”, and establishing the Stewarts Point Rancheria reservation.
